About:

Big fish, big fly. While not always the case, this rule does ring true for many warmwater and saltwater fisheries with anglers casting larger flies than ever before. With a powerful but comfortable casting action, the new PAYLOAD series of rods are designed to help anglers cast those heavy lines and big flies more effectively. Whether launching a double-articulated streamer to the far bank with the 689-4 or dredging the Sacramento Delta with the 989-4, anglers will notice how easy it is to hurl a heavy line and big fly with the PAYLOAD.

Gear Condition Chart

Fly Rods

10 - Like New. This rod will appear almost identical to a brand-new one. There might be a slightly darker cork handle, but otherwise, it will be indistinguishable from a rod found in a fly shop that customers have tested a few times.

9 - Almost New. This rod has seen a few fishing outings. Its cork handle will be darker than new, and there might be minor imperfections on the blank, like a few short, light scratches.

8 - Excellent. This is a great rod. The cork handle shows signs of wear, and the blank exhibits scratches from encounters with drift boats, rocks, and Clouser minnows, among other things. The scratches on the blank and reel seat are more noticeable and frequent. Occasionally, there might be tiny cracks in the epoxy, although they would only be discernible upon close inspection.

7 - Very Good. This is a pre-owned rod with many days of use on the water. The cork handle will show considerable wear, appearing quite dark, and there might be some small filler missing. The blank is likely to show easily visible scratches, along with minor damage deeper than the paint. There could be some slight epoxy damage as well. Despite these signs of use, these rods are still perfectly functional and will have minimal damage.

6 - Good. These are heavily used rods that have endured numerous seasons on the water. The cork handle will be extensively worn and quite dark, likely with missing cork filler. The blank is likely to bear numerous scratches, some of which may be deeper than surface level. Anticipate some epoxy damage and possibly bent guides. While these rods are still fully functional, they may not be aesthetically pleasing due to their wear and tear.

5 and Below - Rods of this condition are rare for us. They tend to have significant problems, often requiring substantial repairs before they can be used.

Fly Reels

10 - Like New. This reel is in pristine condition, appearing brand new in every aspect. There might be extremely subtle signs of wear, if any.

9 - Near Mint. Almost like new, showing only the smallest traces of wear that are barely noticeable. It functions perfectly.

8 - Excellent. Displays indications of use and could feature minor cosmetic imperfections such as dents or scratches from regular wear and tear.

7 - Very Good. Exhibits moderate signs of use but is still in good working condition. There might be minor scuffs or wear marks, none of which impact its performance.

6 - Poor. Displays extensive cosmetic damage and potentially has structural issues that require repair to be fully functional. It can still be used, but not without concerns about its performance and durability.

5 and Below - Reels of this condition are rare for us. They tend to have significant problems, often requiring substantial repairs before they can be used.
